Kitchen Renovations in Etobicoke
Kitchens are where households actually live, and where renovation decisions are hardest to reverse. We build kitchens around how you cook and move rather than around a cabinet catalogue.
What we do
- Custom cabinetry built to the room, not assembled from stock
- Load-bearing wall removal with engineered beams and permits
- Islands, peninsulas and pantry builds
- Properly sized and ducted ventilation with make-up air
- Stone, quartz and solid-surface countertops
- Appliance integration and dedicated circuits
Layout before finishes
The most valuable hours in a kitchen project are spent on layout, and they happen before anyone chooses a colour. Where the sink, cooking surface and refrigeration sit relative to each other determines whether the room works, and it is fixed by plumbing and ventilation runs that are difficult to change afterwards.
We look at clearances around islands, whether two people can work without colliding, where you unload groceries, where the bin goes, and whether appliance doors conflict when open. These are unglamorous questions and they are the ones people live with daily.
Opening a wall properly
Removing the wall between a kitchen and living space is the most requested change we get, and it is structural work. If the wall is load-bearing it needs an engineered beam sized for the span and load above, with a proper load path carried down through the floor structure to the footings — not just a beam dropped in at ceiling level.
That load path is what gets skipped. We involve an engineer, obtain the permit, and build the support down to bearing. It also frequently means relocating ductwork, plumbing and electrical that ran in the removed wall, which is why an accurate quote for wall removal cannot be given over the phone.
Cabinetry, counters and ventilation
We build custom cabinetry to the room rather than assembling stock boxes and filling the gaps with trim. In older Etobicoke houses, where walls are rarely square and ceiling heights vary, that difference is visible: full-height cabinets that actually meet the ceiling, and runs that finish cleanly against out-of-plumb walls.
Ventilation is routinely undersized. A powerful range hood needs to be ducted to the exterior with adequately sized rigid duct and, above certain capacities, needs make-up air to avoid depressurising the house and backdrafting other fuel-burning appliances. This is a safety issue, not a preference.
Living through it
A kitchen renovation removes the room the household depends on, usually for six to ten weeks. We sequence work to compress the period without a functioning kitchen, set up a temporary space with the fridge and a sink or kettle where the layout allows, and dust-seal the work area properly.
We also order cabinetry, stone and appliances before demolition begins. The most common cause of a kitchen sitting unusable for an extra month is a long-lead item ordered after the job started.
Common questions
Can I remove the wall between my kitchen and living room?
Usually, but if it is load-bearing it needs an engineered beam and a load path carried down to the footings, plus a building permit. Ductwork, plumbing and wiring inside that wall also need relocating. We determine whether it is load-bearing during the site visit — it cannot be assessed reliably from photographs.
How long will I be without a kitchen?
Typically six to ten weeks for a full renovation. We reduce it by ordering all long-lead items before demolition and by sequencing so that the sink and appliances return as early as the work allows. We will also help set up a temporary kitchen elsewhere in the house.
Is custom cabinetry worth it over stock?
In older Etobicoke houses, usually yes. Walls are rarely square and ceilings vary, so stock boxes leave filler strips and gaps at the ceiling. Custom uses the full volume of the room and fits the space you actually have. For a new build with square walls the gap narrows considerably.
